The world we live in is always changing. We are told that to be successful, we have to keep up with the incessant notifications on our phones and the push to go up the employment ladder; to always be productive, work more, and get to the end as quickly as possible. We might think that if we are not running fast, we are falling behind. It seems like everything is moving too quickly.
But what if we stop? What if we move a little slower? It is not about being lazy or giving up. It is about a new type of strength; the strength to set our own pace.
Thinking About the Race Again
It is easy to miss everything along the way when we are in a hurry to get somewhere. Imagine that our life is a long road trip. We miss the details as we go 100 kms per hour along the highway. We see the blur of the scenery, but we miss the lovely sunset, the interesting roadside attraction, and the small-town restaurant with the finest coffee.
When we move slower, we have more time to actually see the adventure. We can see what is going on around we, both good and terrible. It lets we put the quality of our trip ahead of the pace. We are not just checking off milestones; we are really living them. We may learn from our mistakes and enjoy our minor wins. This change in point of view changes a race into an exploration.
A More Careful Way
Taking things slow also helps us be more careful and purposeful. We make more blunders when we are in a hurry. We might skip steps at work, say something we wish we had not, or miss an important detail. But if we take our time, we can think about them more carefully and accurately. It is not enough to just avoid making mistakes; we have to do things right.
This intentionality goes beyond our own path. When we are not just thinking about ourselves and how fast we are going, we can help other people. When we move slower, we might see someone on the side of the road who needs help; and we will have the time and energy to stop and aid them. This could be a buddy who needs someone to talk to, a coworker who is having trouble with a project, or a stranger who needs a little kindness. Taking our time makes room for empathy and connection, turning a journey that was meant to be alone into one that is shared.
Having Fun at the Stops Along the Way
One of the best things about slowing down is also that we can enjoy the stops. The world tells us to keep going, yet life is not a straight line all the time. There will be times when we have to stop totally and take a different route. It could be to get over an illness, take care of a family member, or just take a break and recharge. These are not problems; they are just parts of the adventure.
It is really important to accept these stops. Let us take a break, think about things, and change our course. Like a car needs to stop for gas and repairs, we need breaks to recharge our thoughts and spirits. These breaks, whether they are intended or not, are chances to grow. We can find a new interest, reconnect with ourselves, or realise that the place we are going is not really what we want after all.
For instance, a father who has to take time from work to take care of a sick child might first think that he is lagging behind in his career. But this time off work lets him totally focus on his family, which strengthens his bond with his son in ways that would have been impossible otherwise. He might find a greater meaning in being a father when he realises that the love and support he gives at home is his greatest legacy, not the work he does at the workplace.
Enjoy and Help
In the end, we know we will get to where we are headed. We know for sure where we are going. The travel itself is not assured, though. So, why not make it a trip we will always remember?
Take the time to enjoy the view, help another traveler, and enjoy the little things. Because sometimes the greatest way to go is the slowest way.
